John Robert Fowles was born March
31, 1926 in Leigh on Sea, a small town located about 40 miles from London in
the county of Essex, England. He recalls the English suburban culture of the
1930s as oppressively conformist and his family life as intensely conventional.
Of his childhood, Fowles says "I have tried to escape ever since."
Fowles attended Bedford School, a
large boarding school designed to prepare boys for university, from ages 13 to
18. After briefly attending the University of Edinburgh, Fowles began
compulsory military service in 1945 with training at Dart moor, where he spent
the next two years. World War II ended shortly after his training began so
Fowles never came near combat, and by1947 he had decided that the military life
was not for him.Fowles then spent four years at Oxford, where he discovered the
writings of the French existentialists. In particular he admired Albert Camus
and Jean Paul Sartre, whose writings corresponded with his own ideas about
conformity and the will of the individual. He received a degree in French in
1950 and began to consider a career as a writer. John Fowles died on November
5, 2005 after a long illness
John Fowles is a well known British author
(1926 – 2005) who has dedicated his life to the world of literature. His first
novel, The Collector published in 1963, has been reprinted several
times and has been translated into many languages, thus proving that Fowles’s
early works are still of interest to the public. In
late 1960 Fowles completed the first draft of The Collector in
just four weeks. He continued to revise it until the summer of 1962, when he
submitted it to a publisher it appeared in the spring of 1963 and was an
immediate best seller. The critical acclaim and commercial success of the book
allowed Fowles to devote all of his time to writing.

Synopsis of novel
The Collector is the story of the abduction and imprisonment of
Miranda Grey by Frederick Clegg, the first part of the story began Clegg very obsessed with
Miranda Grey, a middle class art student . He admires her from distance, but is
unable to make any contact with her because of his not brave. One day, he wins
a large prize This makes it possible for him to stop working and buy isolated
house in the countryside . . He feels lonely and wants to be with Miranda .
introduce conflicts when he kidnaps Miranda by drugging her with
chloroform and locks her up in the cellar of his house. He is convinced that
Miranda will start to love him after some time . he promise not to sexually
molest her and to shower her with gifts and the comforts of home but she can't
leave the cellar.
The second part of the novel is narrated by Miranda from a diary
that she keeps during her captivity . At first, Miranda thinks that Clegg has
sexual motives for abducting her, but that this is not true. She starts to have
some pity for clegg (caliban) . conflict when Miranda uses several attempts to escape. She feigns appendicitis,
but Clegg only pretends to leave, and sees her recover immediately. She tries
to slip a message into the reassuring note that he says he will send to her
parents, but he finds it. When he goes to London, she asks for a number of
articles that will be difficult to find, so that she will have time to, try to
dig her way out with a nail she has found, but that effort also is futile. N
than Miranda much to tell about G.P as the sort of person she would like to
marry. Her friends Antoinette and Piers fail to appreciate the art G. P. has
produced . Before she can try to escape again, she becomes seriously ill and
dies.
The third part of the novel is again narrated by Clegg. complications arise as a result of the conflict he wants to commit suicide
after he learns of Miranda's death, but after he reads in her diary that she
never loved him, he decides that he is not responsible and is better off
without her. The novel ends with his announcement he plans to kidnap another girl
only three weeks after the passing of Miranda .
“ of course I shall
never have guest again … still as a matter of interest I have since been
looking into the problems there would be with the girl in woolworth’s (254) .“ of course (next time) I would be make it clear from the start
who’s boss and what I expect. But it’s still just an idea . I only put the
stove down there today because the room needs drying out anyway (255).
This proves Clegg never learn from mistakes and instead want to
repeat the same mistakes, but the sides are true and pleases him again after
the loss of Miranda as a collection of live butterflies and beautiful.
Issues presented in novel
1.gender and social expectations
Frederick Clegg endured many great losses as a
child .he never felt real love from parents and never really received any
affection from them either. As a result he could not develop a real sense of
trust, and as his were mainly woman (mother), this would have had a profound
impact of his view of the gender. In addition to this, Clegg missed out on a
male (father) in his life, in particular in the critical period of puberty. All
this and more encouraged Clegg to develop a sense of inferiority within
himself, severely damaged his ideas of gender and encouraged him to become as
selfish as his mother was by putting his own feelings before anyone else’s and
kidnapping the innocent art student Miranda. With all this being said, I
believe Clegg’s childhood had an enormous impact in the shaping of his mental
illness.
2. marriage and family
Fredrick Clegg, the abnormal kidnapper featured in “The Collector”,
has obvious problems both in coming to terms with his own self and developing
and maintaining normal human relationships. He holds a common disregard for
social rules, norms and cultural codes, as well as an indifference to the
rights and feelings of others . all of which are the common characteristics of
a person of sociopathic nature. However, the blame for the development
of this disorder cannot be placed on him alone, as the major causes include
parental neglect and great shocks within childhood . both of which Clegg helplessly had to
experience. His nonconformist .
3 .Social
issues
Frederick is unable to adapt to the modern, the real world. He
lives in a world of dreams and fantasies, unconsciously influenced by popular
TV shows and movies. He believes that he can build a world for himself and
Miranda, where they can live happily together as husband and wife. As long as
he thinks that he can make her fall in love with him, it doesn’t matter that
Miranda is a prisoner living in a room in his secluded basement.
Evaluation and conclusion
1 .Like and
dislike
I really like this novel “the collector” because I
find The Collector to be one of the most horrifying books that linger in my
mind . The final section, a short and chilling is told by Clegg And in this finally, the truest reflection of
his nature is revealed to us. Innocents beware, there are among us people of
unspeakable cruelty. But I didn’t like the middle part of the book so
much, as Miranda’s relationship with the artist didn’t interest me much. There
were some philosophical that I also found less interesting. I want to know what
would happen to Miranda in her current situation .Overall, this was a scary
story because Frederick had a very odd idea about what was right or wrong. He
didn’t see anything wrong in keeping Miranda imprisoned and it wasn’t clear for
a long time how this story would end.
2 .The weak and strong of the story
The strong of the story is First it has an
interesting plot, and we are hooked from page one to discover what Fred does,
he seems so weird at the start (and doesn't change!). After getting into the
plot further, and discovering some of
Fred's background, i become intrigued with him, because he is so
different. His values, thoughts and ideas are so radical that is is very
unlikely that a reader will have come across them before, and because of this
I interested to find out what happens to
him. We want to see how he turns out. The strength of this book lies in the two
different characters in the show author. story becomes interesting when one
perspective in view of Clegg and the other from Miranda. we came to know the
minds of both the overall character of the past and they are now. we feel a
part of the story and carry the current tense atmosphere miranda tried several
times to escape and when cleeg her pause. This story is very entertaining.
The weak of the story is not to much, the first
use of the initials on miranda diary that makes the reader at first did not
immediately understand and know the names of the characters are intended as GP
(George Paston), C (Caliban / Frederic Clegg) , M (Miranda), is also still on
Miranda's diary contained the explanation is quite a lot to figure GP made me
impatient quickly through that as boring and less interesting. GP who thought
philosophy conveyed Miranda adds boredom.
3 .Important
insights and lessons
I got some lessons and this new novel
previously unknown to me. this is about what is right and what is wrong about
thinking and the will that we want. not all the things we can have in this
world, especially in the matter of love and loving. if you love someone does
not mean justifying wrong doing to get it. as happened to Clegg in the novel,
he is so sad and scary to me. one side sympathize because life is so sad, but
on the other hand I hate because he makes miranda die even though he did not
intend. Selfishness than anything else in him. the Nonconformist that failure
by his aunt, was a supporter of the action during imprison Miranda Clegg. but
Clegg is a good type of kidnappers because whatever the desired Miranda during
want basement unless one is out. here look cleeg deep love for Miranda, but is
not supported with a sense of understanding where Miranda was so tormented
imprisoned for months.
cleeg as a butterfly collector. everyday
he liked to collect and make butterflies for display mortified. here we can see
Miranda as one of the most beautiful of her collections. Miranda alive and able
to communicate with him, but in this case expect to love her collection slowly
to become immortal. humans as social beings have the right and need to feel
freedom in everything, expression, enjoying the beauty of nature, interact, and
others. but Clegg make a big mistake .
4 .Recommendation
I recommend this novel for students majoring in
English literature because this novel is extraordinary, which we can understand
the same events from two different characters. if you intend to read it, do not
get too carried away imagination because this novel has been the inspiration of
many serial killers in the world to perform an action.
